Ku-Kluk-Klan. This is a strange word and must surely have some significance. The word Ku-Kluk which designates a band of Regulators in Texas and other Western states, is supposed to be derived from the Greek word Kuklos, which means circle.

But what is this Klan? Why, evidently the spirits of the dead Confederate soldiers, rising out of their graves on battlefields and cemeteries and riding about their beloved country, watching the acts and doings of traitors and conspirators. These spirits have been moved out of their graves by the vile, sick and hellish oppression heaped upon their down trodden, living friends and countrymen. they are the opposers of the Radical secret organizations and will avenge the wrongs committed by Radicalism, having no fear of court or court martial, for these tribunals have no jurisdiction over acts committed by ghosts.

In all seriousness we assert the opinion that this organization I s the natural growth of these disordered times, destined to extend to every Southern city and town, for violence and wrong beget violence and wrong.

Mrs. Caledonia Doughterty Brooks was born in Newnan, December 22d 1828, and died in Newnan, November 2d, 1867. She was married to E.A. Brooks in 1852, and lived an ornament to the little domestic sphere in which she moved, a devoted wife and a modle [sic] woman. Her disposition was amiable, gentle, kind–her affections ardent and her attachments strong. She loved the church devotedly [Long and flowery description of character]. Sad indeed was the blow that fell so suddenly upon the hearts of the loved ones of her home—already broken and bleeding from recent bereavements. Written by E.P. Birch.

Old Will Bridges, whose mysterious disappearance has returned. His story is that last Wednesday night he left his house with the intention of being absent only a short time. After reaching the distance of twenty or thirty paces from his cabin, he heard what sounded to him like a roaring noise. He said he ran and walked away from what he thought were “ghostly guns” firing at him by countless spectres. He then fell into a gully where he remained until Thursday morning. He secreted himself in some woods until the following Tuesday when hunger drove him to the house of Rev. W.F.S. Powell. The newspaper said that either the old man was a lunatic or the whole thing was concocted by the negroes of the city and vicinity to provoke a conflict with the whites. The newspaper was of the latter opinion. If correct, demands were made that punishment be made to the wicked perpetrators of the plot. A postscript said that the negroes confined to jail had been released at Gen. Meade’s suggestion, without trial.

He was one of the oldest citizens of Newnan, having commenced the practice of the law there shortly after the settlement of the place. Words are inadequate to convey a correct idea of the true character of the deceased in the varied relations of his life. As a lawyer, during a long and laborious practice, he never lost a client; being always true and faithful…he never lost a friend nor sacrificed their good opinion…it is not enough to say of his domestic relations that he was a good husband and father. He was kind, indulgent, faithful, forbearing, charitable, gentle, affectionate, etc. etc. Written by D.F. Hammond, Atlanta.
