Newnan, Coweta County, Georgia

January 6, 1866

Elections: G.H. Carmichael, Sheriff; J.P. Brewster, Clerk Superior Court, W. Goldsberry, Clerk Inf. Court, J. Marlow, Tax Receiver, J.B. Neely, Tax Collector, John Kelly, Coroner and Jas H. Graham, Surveyor.

On last Sat. two little boys in a freezing starving condition and entirely forsaken by their mother were found in or near the jail. The elder was two or three years and the younger about eight months. As soon as the fact became known Prof. Smith of this place proposed to receive and provide for the physical, mental and moral wants of the elder boy. The younger child has been equally fortunate for Mr. Shannon, one of our citizen, took charge of him. P.S. Since the above was written, the mother has returned and taken the children. She said she left the children in the charge of a negro who agreed to provide for them but deserted them instead.

Married on 2d inst. by J.P. Reese, Esq. at the residence of James Morgan, the bride's father, Mr. Levi F. Sewel to Miss Martha F. Morgan of Coweta Co.

January 13, 1866

Andrew Calhoun, son of Dr. A.B. Calhoun, had his ankle joint crushed by a railroad car while standing near the platform. There is great probability amputation will follow. Two negro soldiers were standing on the same platform and were seriously injured. It is thought that one or both will not recover.

The living members of the Newnan Guard printed in the Newnan Herald Tribute of Respect to the Heroic Dead. Committee: L.R. Ray, J.J. Davis, W.S. Beadles, J.C. Wooten. C.A. McKinney, Secretary.

January 20, 1866

We have learned from Judge R.Y. Brown the particulars of the attempted murder of James Cureton living in Newberry District, South Carolina, but formerly a citizen of this county. About 10 o'clock at night of the 25th December a party of twenty-five armed negroes went to his home. Some broke down the door, while the outsiders fired at him through the window. So near were they that his clothes were set on fire. Two balls passed through his body, one through his left lung. Afterwards, he was beaten by the villains and left for dead. His son was also severely wounded. The object of the outlaws was nothing but murder of the whites. They had no special spite at Mr. Cureton. We are pleased to learn that there is a fair prospect of the recovery of the Mr. Cureton and his son. The negroes were all armed with Enfield rifles. Seven of the scoundrels have been apprehended and are now in Newbury jail. Dave, formerly a slave of James Harris, late of this county, was the leader and is one of the seven.

Would it not be well for our citizen to be on the alert as thefts are frequent and outrageous acts such as described above may be perpetrated at any time?

The same year of his removal to our county, he married Miss Mary C. Griffin, daughter of the late John Griffin, Esq. On the 1st inst., Joshua Hill, while superintending a Planing Machine at the new Cotton Factory at Wilcoxon's Mill six miles from the city, had his left hand cut off and dreadfully mangled by the planers. The hand was taken off directly at the wrist joint. The patient is reported as doing well.

October 13, 1866

Death is the common lot of humanity. Its tread is heard alike in cottage and in palace. Park E. Arnold is no more. The dread summons came and he bowed to the mandate of death. He was no ordinary man. Nature had endowed him with rare qualities of mind and body. Without the advantages of an education, he was early in life thrown out in the world to battle for its victories unaided and alone. His untiring energy and sleepless activity could not fail to insure him success. Eulogy.

A Precious Document from the Columbus (Ga.) Sun and Times: A letter was found in the street of Columbia immediately after the army of General Sherman had left. The original is preserved.

“Camp Near Camden, S.C. February 26, 1865

My Dear Wife: — I have no time for particulars. We have had a glorious time in this State. Unrestricted license to burn and plunder was the order of the day. The chivalry has been stripped of most of its valuables. Gold watches, silver pitchers, cups, spoons, forks, etc. are as common in camp as blackberries. The terms of plunder are as follows: The valuables procured are estimated by companies. Each company is required to exhibit the results of its operations at any given place—one-fifth and first choice falls to the share of the commander-in-chief and staff, one-fifth to the corps commander and staff, one-fifth to the field officers of regiments and two-fifths to the company.

….I am not joking. I have at least a quart of jewelry for you and all the girls and some No. 1 diamond rings and pins among them….We took gold and silver enough from the d—d rebels to have reduced their infernal currency twice over. This (the currency) whenever we come across it, was burned, as we considered it utterly worthless…The order to march has arrived and I must close hurriedly. Love to grandmother and Aunt Charlotte. Take care of yourself and the children. Your affectionate husband Thomas J. Myers, Lieutenant. The letter was address to Mrs. Thomas J. Myers, Boston, Mass.

So beautiful in virtue, so attractive are the ways of the good, that none behold them but to admire….as a wife she was affectionate, kind, devoted and loving. As a daughter, her care of her aged and kind mother, who in deep distress survives her, was remarkable. As a mother, to, she did perhaps her whole duty, the mother of many children, yet she controlled them in love, she reared them to know and to their duty. She was a Christian and died in the faith.
