MONMOUTH ATLAS

1854

January 6, 1854

From the LaCrosse, [WI] Democrat: Mr. Josiah B. Fletcher and wife with two of their boys one about 15 and the other 6, started on the morning of yesterday in a small boat to Pine Creek on the opposite side of the river. On their return with about 400 lb. of fish, while in the channel opposite Mr. Cameron, the boat filled with water and immediately upset. Mr. Fletcher and his wife, sunk to rise no more. The oldest boy succeeded in getting hold of the boat and with the aid of oneof the oars managed to save his brother. He exhibited a degree of self‑possession and heroism seldom manifested by persons of his age.

Six small children, two boys and four girls, of ages 11, 8, 4 and 3 are suddenly deprived of both parents, among strangers and hundreds of miles distant from any of their relations. Mr. Fletcher formerly resided in Warren Co. and left this place in the summer of 1852 settling in Minn, about 8 miles below the Wabash where he remained until with a few months when he removed to this village. The boy informs us his grandfather lives in Warren Co., near Monmouth and that his name is Frank Goddard; that he has two uncles there named Joshua Goddard and John Short. A deep interest is felt by our citizens in the interest of the orphan children and they will be abundantly provided for until they can be taken to their friends in Illinois.
