Letter from A.C. Higgins correcting data on John A. Moore who “was the son of Samuel Moore, who resides in Adams Co. Ohio. He removed to Illinois nearly three years ago and shortly after his arrival connected himself with the U.P. Church at Monmouth. He remained in fellowship with the church at that point until last Spring, when he united with church at Cedar Spring.”

Eleven more members of the regiment have died: Alexander M. Nelson and James H. Giles of Co. B, died at Donelson; George F. Peal and James H. Waggoner of Company C; the former died at the residence of Mr. A. Claycomb in Monmouth and the latter in the hospital at Paducah. Of Co. D, George Mitchell died at Paducah, John C. Woodhams and James S. Freland died at Donelson. George T. Hanks of Co. E died at Paducah. Stephen T. McBride and Frederick Palmer, both of Co. H and James H. Freeman of Co. I, died at Donelson.

Died at the Planter’s Hotel at Ft. Donelson, Tennessee, December 10th, James H. Giles of Co. B., 93rd Regt, Ill. Vols., aged 22 years. He was the son of John P. and Sarah Giles of Tompkins Twp., Warren Co. Ill. The father and mother were both connected with the U.P. Church in Young America. In April 1861, the father passed from the labors of the church militant to the rest of the church triumphant. James was sick a number of weeks -- for sometime he remained in the hospital, but after the arrival of Dr. Tubbs at this place, he was removed to the Hotel. The landlord, landlady, Dr. Tubbs, Capt. McClanahan, the members of his company and other friends watched with intense anxiety hoping till the last hour that this noble youth might be spared. James was the eldest of seven children. His brother, William, the second child, was killed in the battle of Perryville. When the President’s call came for “three hundred thousand more” it became a serious question with Mrs. Giles, “Do I owe any more of my sons to my Country” and that question after deep and prayerful consideration she answered in the affirmative. Which? James H. was a weakly young man -- Richard rather young, but strong and healthy, so she determined Richard should go. James H. viewed it another way. There might be a draft and Richard was not subject. If Richard volunteered, James might be drafted and the mother would be left destitute of support and comfort. In view of these considerations, he determined himself to go to war.

Aaron Hoig, near Young America was left at the hospital at Danville when the Company left.

Vicksburg, May 29th: to Samuel Stephenson, Esq. With feelings of deepest sorrow I seat myself on the battlefield to make a sad record - the death of your most worthy son, John B. Stephen-son who was killed yesterday at 2:30 p.m. by a rifle ball passing through his head. He died instantly. The Doctor was the only regimental physician present with our sharpshooters near the fort. [Details of how he was killed and of character] We had a coffin made and I procured a bushel of salt to preserve the body so that I think he will be easily removed. We buried him on the field a short distance below where he fell and close along the side of two others of lamented comrades. The board that marks the grave is the lid of a cartridge box and marked “Dr. John B. Stephenson, Co. F. 17th Ill. Vol. Inf. May 28th 1863.” After the fall of Vicksburg, I think there will be no trouble in moving the body, should you wish it; but at present it would be very difficult to do anything.” Signed, J. Moore.

Letter from Co. A, 83rd Ill. Regt. dated September 7. We, the members have learned that one Harvey Balding, formerly a member of our Company and who was discharged about the 1st of July, has since returned to Warren Co. and been elevated to Capt. of Copperheads, and is engaged in drilling a band of those reptiles somewhere in the vicinity of Lancaster.

We, the members of Co. A feel disgraced on account of his former connection with us and take this method of informing the people of Warren Co. that there are no copperheads remaining in our company; but on the contrary every man of us are decidedly down on Southern traitors in arms against the constitution and the laws. But infinitely more do we detest those Northern reptiles who, while enjoying the benefits of our institutions and protected by our laws, leave no means untried to scatter discord and to the utmost of their ability render powerless every act of the government to crush this rebellion and save the Union. Signed,

Long article regarding death of Mrs. Elizabeth Findley on Friday last” widow of the late Matthew Findley. She resided at her house about 4 miles from the place with two sons and a daughter all adults. John Q. and Sarah Findley started to town to the fair; M.M. Findley went to the field. He was alarmed when his mother could not later be found and alerted the married sons. About a half hour after dark, she was found dead, lying on the side of ravine. Although she appeared injured, it was thought she died from a fall from the tree. During Sat. a suspicion arose she had been shot. The facts at the inquest were that on Friday, George Matthews, accompanied by his brother, Greeley, and Frank Dallam, the two last being about 14 years old. The two went out hunting. Frank Dallam thought he saw a turkey in the tree and fired the fatal shots. Afraid, the boys returned home and later Frank told his mother. Mrs. Findley was in her 74th year and was native of Maryland. She resided in this neighborhood for more than a quarter of a century.
