We omitted last week notice of the death of French Brownlee of Sumner Twp., a member of Co. B of the 56th Illinois Volunteers. He escaped the bullets of the enemy in several engagements to die of disease in the hospital at Chattanooga.

January 29, 1864

A.C. Higgins writes that the health of the right wing” is good. Ten are in the hospital: M. Dillon, Co. A; J. Medhurst, J.A. Harsha, Corp. Drennin, Mannon and Bone, R. Kirkpatrick and Wm. Bramhill Co. F; and M. Cochran of Co. L. All are convalescent.

 

Henry M. Sexton was found concealed in the straw and the barn of Wm. Wallace of Oleana, Henderson Co. on the 17th. It was wormed out of him” that he intended to steal a horse and had stolen one previously. He was arrested by St. Louis police.

Died in the hospital at Vicksburg, Mississippi of Camp Diarrhea, Jan 5th, Daniel S. Leighty in the 48th year of his age. He leaves a wife, three sons and two daughters. Eulogy.

 

Died here January 13th, Ann, daughter of above named Daniel S. Leighty, aged 9 years.

 

Died at the residence of her husband in the town of Tompkins December 29th, Mrs. Mary Ann McNiece in the 45th year of her age. The deceased was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Monmouth. [Description of character]

Died in the city Wed. at the residence of her son, J.S. Spriggs, Mrs. Elizabeth L. Spriggs in the 66th year of her age. Funeral services held at the First Presbyterian Church.

 

Died in Hale Twp. of scarlet fever January 28th, Hamilton R. son of Wm. and Anna M. Spence, aged 2y, 5m, 15d. Died in Hale Twp. February 3rd of scarlet fever, Sammie W. son of Wm. and Anna M. Spence, aged 6 months. Eulogy.

 

Died February 7th J.F. McCrery, aged 32y, 6m. The deceased was a member of the Associate Reformed Church at Cedar Creek under the care of late Rev. Porter, but due to ill health moved to Monmouth. Charter member of the 2nd Presbyterian Church in Monmouth. He leaves a wife and two children. Died January 18th, John Allen McCrery, son of above aged ly, 9m.

March 25

A soldier by the name of Sands of Young America learned that his mother had ben abused during his absence by a man named Sam Wilcox who is known in that community as a copperhead. As a result the community became incensed, windows were broken, fire-arms discharge, etc. [Details] Whit Gilmore and Samuel Hutchinson, two noted copperheads, took the oath of allegiance. Amongst those who armed themselves in defense was Dr. Elliot. During a scuffle with McDougal, the latter was shot through the fleshy part of the arm.

 

We hear that Lt. Williams of this city, serving in the 1st Iowa Battery, died at St. Louis on Wednesday last.

 

Died February 18th of scarlet fever 5 miles west of Monmouth, John Calvin son of Thomas and Sarah McBroom, aged 5y, 2m, 2d. Eulogy.

 

Died in Orono, February 6th Mrs. Lucinda Henry, aged 52y, 11m, 21d. For many years sister Henry resided in Illinois and there a few years ago the loved forms of an only son and daughter, each having attained majority, were consigned to the native dust. They were followed to the spirit land by her companion and she was a widow indeed and alone, with the exception of a little girl adopted after the decease of her children. The loss of her family caused great depression of spirits and she sought sympathy and comfort among relatives in New England. Details of her last weeks. From the Augusta (Maine) Banner.

The body of Lt. James M. Williams who died at Woodville, Alabama on 18th ult. arrived in Monmouth on Wednesday. The funeral will take place at the 1st Presbyterian Church on Friday.

 

Married in this city on March 24th at Bay State House by Rev. D.B. Jones, Mr. Wesley Malcolm to Miss Harriet Emma Statt, both of Warren Co.

 

Died at her residence 3 miles south of Monmouth on the 7th ult., Mrs. Nancy Hardinbrook daughter of Allen Kelley and wife of Francis Hardinbrook. She was born in Northumberland Co. Pennsylvania on March 5th 1809. Made a profession of religion and united with Harmony Presbyterian Church in Knox Co. in 1829. Her death was sudden.

 

Died in this city, March 18th, Mr. James H. Hall, formerly of Montgomery Co. Kentucky.

Died February 18th of scarlet fever five miles west of Monmouth, Lizzie only daughter of William and Lucy Wilson, aged 3y, 2m. Eulogy.

 

Died at his residence in Hale Twp. on 27th March last, Aniel Rodgers, in 78th year of his age. Mr. Rodgers was an early settler in this part of the country, having come to it more than 30 years ago. He was consequently well known in the community and all who knew him respected him.

Died in Hale Twp. on 5th inst. Mr. S.H. Smalley in the 65th year of his age.

 

Died at Fort Donelson, Tennessee, on April 7th of disease of the heart, Thomas J. Baugh, age 32y, 10, 2d. He was born in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson Co. Ill. and on 2 March 1854, he was married to Miriam A. Hardenbrook. Long article about military career and decision to return to Fort Donelson after discharge. He was buried there.

 

April 29, 1864

Harrison M. Wilson, age 17 years, a nephew of Mr. Reuben Wilson of this city and John H. Fisher, deaf mutes were both killed on the Terre Haute and Richmond Railroad near Indianapolis, IN on 28th ult. They were walking on the track and being deaf did not hear the Engineer’s whistle. They were students in the Deaf and Dumb Institution at Indianapolis.

 

Died at Woolville, Alabama, on 18th March last 1st Lt. James Williams of 1st Regt. Artillery aged 29y, 4m. Lt. Williams was a native of Philadelphia, and removed to Monmouth in 1857. He married on 28 March 1861 Miss Martha Coiner, who survives him. On August 17th 1861, he enlisted in the 1st Iowa Battery and was ordered to Missouri. He participated in the battles of Sugar Creek, Pea Ridge and the march through Arkansas to Helena. After Helena, he returned home sick. Later, he was transferred to Tennessee, and participated in the terrible march of Sherman’s Corps from Corinth to Chattanooga and the almost incessant battles along the way. He was in the battle of Tuscumbia in the three day’s battle of Cherokee at Cane Creek, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and Ringgold.

        The incessant marching wore him away. At last, attacked by dysentery, he sank under it. His last days were cheered by the company and the care of his father.

        He was promoted to 2nd Lt. after battle of Pea Ridge and 1st Lt. after the march to Helena. Among the brave and noble heroes who have sealed their devotion to their country write the name of James Williams.

Jacob Sands, struck by piece of shell on foot; foot amputated. Sgt. J.A. Porter, stuck on the head by a limb from a tree; Sgt. John W. McCoy, finger shot off. Corp. Samuel N. Wilson struck in the hand by a piece of shell, slight; Pvt. Robert J. Caldwell, arm, slight; Geo W. Nichols, finger shot off; Jams P. Barton, shot in the head, supposed mortal.

J.E. Laferty wrote from near Dallas Georgia on May 27th, when the 102nd Regt. was burying the dead. Co. E 102nd: Cook was killed; John McCutcheon wounded, thought mortally. M. Oswalt lost a leg. Friday they marched into battle. Man named Harvey killed in Co G. Wounded: Sgt. Tidball, slight; Corp. Rothrock, not dangerous; Henry Middaugh, dangerous. J. Bentz, slight, J. Laughead, slight; J. Carmichael, serious. L. Carson wounded in right hand which was takn off today. Lt. Willets had a hole shot through his hat.

 

Died June 2nd Sarah E. daughter of B. Parker, Esq. of this city, aged 11y, 4m. Eulogy.

Charley Melville writes from near Dallas, Georgia, on June 1. D.P. Baldwin of Co. C 36th Ill. was killed—known as “Little Dan. Lt. Sands left a foot in the amputating room. Sgt. Porter was struck down, not to rise again. Caldwell and Nichols both wounded. They bore their sufferings without a murmur. At Adair, 30 more of our boys fell. James Davis, an orphan boy of Co. C, was killed and McCoy, Barton and Sam’l Wilson were wounded. Details of battle of the 25th. Lt. Turnbull shot in the knee. Last night the Ord. Sgt. of Co. A of the 36th had his right arm amputated. Orderly, James I. Wilson had some close calls but is all right.

 

Killed in battle at Spottsylvania [Va.] on May 19th, Lemuel E. Tubbs, grandson of Lemuel Tubbs of Tompkins Twp.

Died at his residence in Spring Grove July 4th, Elias Winbigler, aged 54 years.

 

July 15

O.M.R. writes from near Marietta, Georgia on June 29th. “Again has the gallant 36th met the enemy.” In Co. C, Sgt. Geo N. Mercer was struck by a bullet in the lower jaw. John Wilson was wounded through the right arm. They both have gone to Chattanooga. Jack Snodgrass was struck in the ankle; his leg had to be amputated. Harlen E. King is “unconcerned about the port hole through his left thigh.” Little James Barton, who was wounded at Adairville is now in Chattanooga and doing well. His skull was fractured, but is all right now.

 

Died 9th inst. Mary Isabel, child of Samuel & Rebecca Merryfield.

 

July 22

We learn from the Oquawka Spectator that Thad. A. Kinsloe was tried by court martial upon the charge of desertion, due to his overstaying his time during the sickness and subsequent death of his young and interesting wife. Mr. Harris succeeded in having the verdict set aside and an order forwarded for Thad’s release.

July 29

From the Will Co. Republican: On Thursday, Theron Barbour of Monmouth, Ill who was visiting his brother-in-law, Mr. L.S. Parker of Lockport, accidentally shot himself while practicing with a revolver in the office of the latter. He was a signal man doing business in Monmouth -- was 30 years of age. He died about two hours after the accident. Young Barbour was brother of E.C. Barbour of Madison Ind. and uncle of Geo R. Barbour of Monmouth. His remains were brought to Monmouth.

August 5, 1864

On 24th April last a little son of Mayor Cowan, about 5 1/2 years, swallowed a piece of glass. An operation was performed, but it was not located. Although he bled from the lungs for several days, he recovered. On Thursday last, a door was accidentally shut violently against him and the offending bead was thrown up.

 

A.C. Higgins reports sickness is increasing at Fort Donelson. Daniel B. Eilenberger died yesterday morning. He had been in the hospital a week with a severe attack of dysentery. The universal testimony of officers and soldiers was that Mr. Eilenberger filled his place well and faithfully in his connection with the army. The deceased leaves a wife and several children.

 

Samuel S. Wallace is in a rather critical condition with remittent fever. Lt. Pierce of Co E was reported dangerously sick.

 

2nd Lt. James P. Dickson of Co. L, 12th Ill Cay. died of fever in hospital at Donelisonville, La. on the 18th ult.

August 12

Charley Melville writes almost from Atlanta” that Thos. R. Pollock of Co. C was wounded on 22nd or 23rd in the wrist and may lose his hand.

 

Dr. Mitchell, formerly of Monmouth, arrived at Fort Donelson by train. His son, John, was in a critical condition—not expected to live—from malignant attack of bilious fever. However, he is better. Samuel Wallace is improving.

A.C. Higgins describes murder during robbery of Lt. Gamble. Two of the four boys murdered were from Nashville. Christopher McCarty was son of John and Sophia McCarty of Abingdon, Knox Co. Ill. Mr. McCarty enlisted Co. I, 83rd in 1862. After his discharge, he spent a short time in Illinois but returned here bringing his son, Christopher. Christopher was 15y, 11m when he was murdered. A father, mother, six brothers and two sisters mourn his death.

 

Ira Butler, Co. C, 83rd Regt was murdered by guerillas in Dixon Co. Tennessee on July 30th in the 23rd year of his age. He was born and matured in Warren Co. He enlisted July 31st 1862 with his brother, Cyrus. Ira leaves a mother, a widow woman residing about 4 miles from Monmouth and several brothers and sisters to mourn his fate.

 

John F. Mitchell of Co. C died last Wednesday morning. Samuel Wallace is doing well. Hugh Wallace was prostrated for a short time but is well now. Mr. Diball of Co D is the most dangerously ill. Admitted to the hospital last Sabbath: Fletcher Marsten of Co. C, Mitchell Y. Huntin of Co. D and Lt. Lattimer of Co. I.

September 2, 1864

Officers of the left wing of the 83rd passed resolution of respect for those members who died on 20th inst. by the hands of the enemy: Co B: Capt. Wm. W. Turnbull, Corp. Mitchell A. Thompson, Fifer: James Pattison and Pvts. Wm. W. Findley, S.A. Foster, John W. Hogue, Wm. F. Martin and David M. Nichols.

        These men were killed by a large squad of rebels about fives miles from the Tennessee River. J. Neily was captured; later paroled. J. Elliot and J.A. Struthers escaped. A fourth, Marion Morrison was badly wounded and beaten, but made his way to the river and is doing well in Paducah hospital. Details of the battle provided. W. Findley was wounded in the face, Jno. W. Hogue was shot in the right breast and D.M. Nichols shot behind the left ear and in the foot. S.A. Foster, by some means, got across the road and into the cornfield. They ran him down and left him there with both thighs broken. A neighbor took him him and sent for a physician, but later another rebel party went into the house and shot him. The Capt. was killed by a ball in the abdomen and one in the right cheek, besides a long gash on the top of his head.

In the year 1818, he emigrated with his father’s family to Champaign Co. Ohio and there resided until 1837 when he moved to Swan Twp., Warren Co.

Died on November 23d of typhoid fever, May Keller, aged 7y, 10m, youngest daughter of Lt. W.A. and S J.B. Peffer.

 

Died at her residence near Sugar Tree Grove November 18th, Mrs. Anna Maria Allen widow of late I.N.E. Allen and daughter of Aniel Rodgers, who lately deceased. She leaves seven children, the youngest not much over a year old. These children within a year have been deprived successively of father, grandfather and mother and with an aged grandmother are overwhelmed with a three fold sorrow.98

On December 1 from Nashville, Jas I. Wilson wrote his father, Peter Wilson regarding the battle near Franklin. I have never seen men fight with such determined bravery in my life. Our regimental flag was completely shattered to pieces and its noble bearer, William Toll, with two others who held it aloft, were severely wounded.” Col. Olson was killed; Adj. Casey lost a leg. Miller Black, shot in face, William Toll, arm broken; S. Matteson in thigh; Samuel Markwell in arm; Ezekiel Skinner in face; William Rodgers in arm; Julius C. Wright in side; R J. Caldwell, missing.

December 23

Public Notice is hereby given that Geo. R. Barbour, Administrator of estate of Theron L. Barbour, deceased, late of Monmouth Twp., Warren Co. will attend the County Court during the February term for the purposes of settling and adjusting all claims.

 

Details of attempted robbery in Henderson Co. involving Davis, Brooks, Jesse Kemp, John B. Fort and Galbraith, the latter three being wounded. One of the robbers was killed; the other two mortally wounded.

 

December 30, 1864

David Irvine, son of David Irvine of Young America and brother of James P. Irvine was killed in the engagement near Nashville on the 16th inst. While charging the enemy’s works, a ball passed through his temple causing instant death. His brother, Robert Irvine was wounded.

 

In the fight at Franklin on 30th November, A.B. Lane of Warren Co. and little Berry Parrish of Cameron meron were wounded. Lane was left in the hands of the enemy.

Co. B (December 15th) Wounded Sgt. Wm. McElhenny in leg, slight; Wm. A. Crowder, shot through hand; Gideon B. Caldwell, shot in shoulder, slight.

 

(December 16th) Killed: George W. Ferrington. Wounded: Lt. R.B. Irvine shot through the thigh; Sgt. Josiah Hough in leg; Corp. John E. Brown, shot through groin, severely, Corp. Lewis C. Dougherty shot in thumb, slight; Niles P. Nelson, arm broken. Col. P. Sidney Post was mortally wounded on 16th.
